Noisy Organs (2022)

30’’

Oude Kerk Amsterdam

Noisy Organs, commissioned by Red Light Arts And Cultre for the s*xworker queer pride 2023 is built around five performers, each carrying a bag with a Bluetooth speaker playing a distinct composed sound. These bodies move through the space following scored trajectories, creating a shifting, subjective soundscape, a moving noise installation experienced from within by the audience. After a period of guided movement, the speaker bags are gradually handed over to audience members. The audience is then instructed to follow a balloon and a central performing body through the Oude Kerk. As the audience members walk through the church with the speakers, specific sound scores are activated by their movement and by the locations they pass through. In this way, the audience becomes the carrier and activator of sound. Individual movements trigger layered sonic events, gradually forming a communal noise composition that unfolds across the architecture of the church. The sounds and texts emitted from the moving speaker bags function as narratives of the balloon, constantly disorienting the listener and challenging the ear to locate the source of sound. The central performing body acts as a catalyst, extending its performative presence by activating technological sound organs outside the body itself. Sound circulates between bodies, architecture, and audience, transforming the Oude Kerk into a living, collective instrument.
